Not impressed with Yamaha Pacifica
I am not overly impressed with the Yamaha PAC612VllFM. I expected more from a 650.00 dollar guitar. Athstetically in was flawless. The setup was terrible (or non existent) After setting the neck relief to about .008 and the Action to about .060 on the low E and resetting the intonation it was considerably better but still not impressive. I have a 129.00 squire bullet that with the upgrade of Fender deluxe locking tuners and a steel tremolo block and Fender custom shop Texas Special pickups Prices out to around 350.00 Pluse what ever you want to add on for my labor and It's a better sounding and better playing guitar than the pacifica. The strat with the texas specials seems way more versitile. The Pacifica to me seems more like a one trick pony and the neck on that 129 dollar Squire seemed far more playable and accurate than the Yamaha. It might just be the luck of the draw but I'm betting that I wouldn't be any happier with a different Pacifica. I've got a Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor ll Pro for 650 bucks that puts them both to shame. That guitar was so perfect right out of box that I will never part with it. The only guitar I have ever seen with perfect intonation!!! Like I said, maybe it's just the luck of the draw. All this said, I don't really think that Sam Ash sold me a lemon but rather, I'm just not that impressed with the yamaha product. (and I am seriously doubting that those Semour Duncan pickups are the real deal. I'm betting that Duncan has somebody else whiping those together for them on the cheap. They simply don't have the clarity or the depth of the Fender custom shop texas specials. All in all, a very nice looking guitar but not one that makes me want to pick it up and play it.
UPDATE 9-11-16: I stripped the Yamaha down again and changed the strings. I installed a set of 10 to 50 Ernie Ball Extra Light Nickel Wound with a .020 Wound G. I reset the relief to .006 at the 9th fret and set the action to .060 at Low E and .050 at High E. I am happy to report that it made a huge difference! After reseting the intonation it was not perfect but it was much better and actually very close to spot on! I have updated my rating to 4 stars. I am still not sure that I like it as much as the Stratocaster but it is worlds better than it was and I now consider it a prettly good guitar! (A Keeper!)
