Practical Hints on Playing the Baritone (Euphonium)
I would give this book about a B-plus for a grade. Some sections are excellent (specifically Brian Bowman's tips on proper embouchure for different note registers, although I would not agree that the players who prefer to narrow the air passageway for high notes by blowing upwards v. downwards in the mouthpiece are "...very few.." in number). The introductory pages distinguishing baritone horns from euphoniums and the mouthpiece diagrams as well as mouthpiece selection tips are also very helpful and informative. In the alternative fingering pages, it would have been useful to discuss the fact that C# (with all three valves depressed)needs to be "humored" a bit since the tone is apt to be somewhat sharp. This is not due to a defect in the instrument but is a natural consequence of the harmonics of valved brass instruments. Overall, Mr Bowman's work should be a great help to beginning baritone/euphonium players and it is well worth the modest price.

2009 Ohio Light Opera - "Mlle Modiste"
First and foremost, I have to state that "Mlle Modiste" is one of my very favorite light opera scores. I wish I could somehow travel back in time to Christmas night in 1905 at the Knickerbocker Theatre in New York City when Charles Dillingham presented Fritzi Scheff in the Broadway opening of this wonderful show by Victor Herbert and Henry Blossom. That, of course, being an impossibility, this new recording by the Ohio Light Opera Company very closely approaches (at least in my mind) what the excitement on Broadway must have been like. "Mlle Modiste" contains some of Herbert's brightest and yet, most delicate music, full of romance and never heavy nor overly "pesante." Despite the score calling for some degree of pesante expression in the Count's song,"I Want What I Want When I Want It," too heavy-handed a treatment would most certainly tend to spoil the delicacy of the entire performance. Thanks to Conductor Michael Borowitz's sensitivity, all the delicacy which Herbert must have intended is preserved throught the entire CD. Even Fifi's artistic showpiece performance, "The Nightingale and the Star" ,while brilliant, never comes across as being heavy or overplayed (avery significant pitfall for a showstopper of this type). Just the right expression comes through to the listener at all times. The Overture is crisp, light and lively and Bebe's Ballet is is outstanding in its sensitive precision. Sara Ann Mitchell interprets Fifi with all the verve and charm that Fritzi Scheff must have demonstrated 105 years ago. In fact, the original performance captured the hearts of President and Mrs.Theodore Roosevelt on its pre-Broadway run in Washington and in Trenton, Herbert and Blossom were called to the stage by an enthralled and enthusiastic audience. When the show reached New York, it would have probably enjoyed even a longer run at the Knickerbocker but for the fact that the theatre was being readied for another incoming triumph of Herbert and Blossom, "The Red Mill." To sum it all up, I have conducted and played the military band selections from "Mlle Modiste" as well as some of the lovely waltzes in a number of musical ensembles, so I have always loved the music, but I never had the opportunity to hear Henry Blossom's dialogue (included on the CD)or some of the songs not included in M. Witmark's 1905 published vocal score. Thus, when I saw that this wonderful new recording was now available, I jumped at the chance to purchase it and I am very happy I did. The CD is outstanding in every way! This CD is a "must have" for any lover of Victor Herbert's music!

    "GO SET A WATCHMAN"
Outstanding novel! Definitely read "To Kill a Mockingbird" first. This "sequel" was first written as the "prequel" but following the story of "Scout" and Atticus is much enhanced by having first read "To Kill a Mockingbird." The book helps clarify who Atticus really is, and just what he believes. These issues are not completely addressed in "Mockingbird" where much of that novel focuses on the adventures of Scout and Jem as children, and their interactions with Atticus , as their father.
