While an outstanding novel, this is a somewhat confusing read. One might want to watch the film first..,
This is a monument of 20th century fiction, and is definitely worth reading.

Our new world Emperor and Empress
A splendid account of the brief period of the empire in Mexico – largely accurate historically, but they do make Juarez out to be a much more appealing person than he actually was! For anyone who has visited Chapultepec Palace it is a fascinating time trip!
