Just what I was looking for!
I want to be more self-sufficient and independent, grow my own food and not be dependent on the electric grid. I'll have to get into it more but the book appears well organized and covers the essentials in considerable detail. Many illustrations. Not a small book. I am impressed and recommend it. Well packaged. Arrived on time. Good price.

A little daunting
A little daunting like setting up communal rules and enforcement after there is no longer organized systems of governance. Lots of things to think about. I bit off a big bite with several books about self containment and surviving off grid. I need time to review this text but it seems authoritative and genuine and certainly makes the reader aware of how difficult things could get after a big crash or even just in a community of like minded folks wanting to live seriously off grid.

A view into my Great Grandmother's lifetime
4 of 4 found this helpful The items in this book comprise how people survived before modern conveniences and store bought food, clothes and laundry. Like preserving meat with lard. Doing laundry without a machine. Kitchens and homes before electricity and refrigeration and running hot or cold water or flush toilets. My great grandmother lived to 102 from 1855 to 1957. She could tell you about Abraham Lincoln as President. I was 7 when she passed. One of my mom's chores every day was filling the kerosene lamps for light at night. I now collect such lamps. And bringing buckets of water into the house. Or going to the beach to collect dinner, clams, oysters, fish, crab, lobster and more. This book will tell you how to do all these things and. Wash clothes on the rocks in the stream. Wow. Engaging. Let's hope we won't have to work this hard. All good to know. Great book. Extensive. Detailed. Worth it's weight in gold if we get stuck off grid or choose it as a lifestyle. Lots of recipes. Beautifully hard bound. A classic that belongs in every library no matter how big or small.
