NEW Bonavita 1.7-Liter Variable Temperature Digital Electric Kettle

Loved it but ended up disappointed

This is my second time around with this kettle. I love the control it allows with the water temperature, how quickly it heats to the correct temperature, and the ability to hold the temperature for up to an hour. My digital thermometer showed the temperature to be fairly accurate. What I did not like was the rather cheap hinge system on the lid that broke after about a year making one-handed opening of the lid problematic. (Fortunately, I had an old GE electric kettle that just happened to use a very similar lid. It took about an hour, but I was able to replace the lid. It wasn't a perfect fit, but it was good enough.) After another month or two, the kettle just stopped heating, which had nothing to do with the lid. But I loved the kettle so much when it did work that I took a chance and purchased another NEW one on ebay. We'll wait to see. In the meantime, I plan to fabricate a screwdriver to fit their proprietary screw heads to open up the base to see if the problem is fixable. As far as being a good value, I'd have to say no due to the problems I've had; otherwise, yes it would be. I hope I'm not kicking myself in another year or so (post-warranty) for doing the same thing and expecting a different result (definition of insanity.)
