Great item.
Excellent item, finely detailed and with the new for the period, five pole motor. Hailed by some as a great puller, this model should easily handle a long string of cars. It seems heavy with weight centered over a relatively short wheelbase. Easily switched from track to overhead contact should this be desired. A great addition to anyone's collection.

Great Marklin Z Scale Railbus Set
A complete z scale railroad set in a take along box. This 1988 set includes a 9v battery controller, track and a special McDonalds embossed Marklin 8816 railbus. Everything needed to setup a small rail track, just add your transistor radio battery. This set was a special production item of limited quantity. Some estimate the production run to be right around 1000 pieces worldwide. This rarely becomes available. The bus is an accurately modeled version of the railbus produced in plastic and reminiscent of the railbuses used all over Germany. It includes the McDonalds markings and is powered by a durable three pole motor which could easily be upgraded to the smoother five pole motor. The interior lighting adds to the realism. The metal motor frame is strong and heavy enough to add weight for this unit to pull one or two railbus trailers (non-powered). I would recommend this set to anyone interested in z scale railroading. A great set, impossible to find without Ebay.

Marklin BR 74, a Long Time Gem
The Marklin BR 74 has been a long time favorite in their Z Scale product line. It seems to be available just a short time after Z Scale was invented. It is available separately, or in a variety of starter sets. These sets are often broken up and the pieces sold separately. Don't pass up a bargain because there is no box because it was probably taken from one of these sets. This model has had at least four different variations since release, a testament to the desirability of the BR 74. It features a die-cast body shell, six drive wheels and working headlights. It is a simple design and easy to service or maintain. Service parts are available for the most part, but watch for the version you are working on and match parts with that version. The older three pole is a dependable motor and will continue to work for a long time. The more recent models of the BR 74 come with the improved five pole motor which is strong and quiet in operation. A five pole can be recognized by the dark color magnet housing around the armature. This can easily be seen thru the windows. An upgrade of the three pole is not as easy as upgrading a engine with the canister type motor. An armature puller would be needed, or check with a vendor which has the complete frame with five pole included. Not a heavy locomotive, this engine can still pull a respectable number of freight or passenger cars and should be considered a starting point and a must for any Z Scale collection, There are some special ones like the museum or Wannsee versions perhaps more than one should be considered..
