The Trivium: The Liberal Arts of Logic, Grammar, and Rhetoric By

    Aristotelian Philosophy Nicely Packaged
Eva Brann said that this book is a treasure. Having read the initial chapters, I can see why. She doesn't waste words. It could be a con for some, but it feels like this book is dense with insights. Only today did I realise that even some statements made in passing can be insightful and worth exploring. For example, she claimed that pupils in England's grammar schools in centuries past had studied Latin grammar and that even a modicum of it helped shaped the mind of Shakespeare. I am yet to test this claim in my own life, but ideas like this are worth exploring, considering how modern education leaves much to be desired. It is steeped into Aristotelian philosophy. An alternative title to this would be Education by Means of Aristotle's Philosophy. Sister Joseph is not apologetic about using Aristotelian terms and insights in discussing how language works (or at least how Aristotle viewed it). While the writings of Aristotle seems random, Sister Joseph has managed to present it in a good package such that this book can be considered a good introduction to his philosophy, even though the aim of this book is to teach the first three liberal arts. If you're interested in reading the Great Books of the Western World, this book along with Adler's 'How to Read a Book', should be required reading as this would help you develop the tools on how to tackle these books.

Good First Book for Learning Esperanto
This is a good book for learning Esperanto. If you want a series of exercises involving grammar-translation, this book is for you. I believe the more modern incarnation of 'Teach Yourself Esperanto' with the title 'Complete Esperanto' emphasizes dialogues and other activities to make learning Esperanto more palatable than just grammar-translation. Don't get this book if you would like to avoid learning grammar and get that instead. The quintessential grammar-translation book of Esperanto is Ivy Kellerman's 'Complete Grammar of Esperanto.' I would have prefered that, but her book doesn't have any answer key. This one does so this is better for self-study. Originally, this book is accompanied by a casette. It's hard to find, except some good soul gives you a copy of the audio. It is just an audio of the dialogues. If you can't get a copy, you can just read it and answer the questions for that dialogue if any.

    JFE Wordbook = More Exercises
'Japanese for Everyone' is an excellent textbook for learning Japanese. It has exercises, but if you want more, this workbook gives more of it. What I really appreciate about the JFE text and the JFE workbook is that answers for the exercises are provided at the back. This is unlike many popular Japanese textbooks where you have to purchase a separate book for the answers.
