Excellent Welch 1402 Vacuum Pump 1402B-01

Rock solid workhorse

The Welch 1402 has been around forever, and for good reason. Some direct-drive pumps with 4-pole motors can do very well, but this belt-drive easily pumps below 0.5 microns (milliTorr) with decent oil. I'm getting 0.3u with KJLSS20 oil, read by an MKS 925 transducer. My only real complaint is that it runs a bit on the hot side. Strictly speaking it doesn't need it, but I point a small desk fan at it during the warmer months.

Works great!

Subjectively, it works as well as my other 17" base-loaded antennas. Nice build quality, but SMA connector has a plastic locking nut instead of the metal one shown--no big deal. Very springy and does not take a set from shipping coiled-up (springs back out straight). Its flexibility makes it much less cumbersome than other long whips.
