Instrumental Spirit
1 of 1 found this helpful Mostly instrumental, you could call it Spirit's Jazz Album. A lot of the tracks are fairly undeveloped background music, as befits a soundtrack album from the sixties. The bonus track demo of Aren't You Glad (a great somg from their 2nd album: The Family That Plays Together) is not worth purchasing this for.
In the end it makes an ineresting, pleasant, and even revealing listen (Randy California can really go jazzy, John Locke shines, Mark Andes reveals more of his talent, except for some slightly intrusive maracas Jay Ferguson is more or less invisible, Ed Cassidy is suprisingly weak in spots, ... and who is playing the vibes? ...hmmm .. not bad), but is really only of interest to Spirit completists .................

Some rare gospel. He's My Star and others.
This is a two-fer (with bonus tracks) A 50s rock album and an early gospel album.
I got this cd specifically for some beautiful gospel ballads that I first heard decades ago and never could find on cd until now.
When Little Richard puts his voice into that gentle emotional ballad place - well, there's nothing else like it. I wish he'd done more of this kind of thing during his career. He's one of the kings of early rock and roll, and of the high powered vocal style - but his voice can be beautiful too.
My Desire is one of the standout ballads. And the other, the prime example, an amazing track with an almost unbelievably beautiful vocal, is He's My Star. It's a "must hear" if you like this kind of thing.
The rock part of the album is good, with some typical throw away material that you would expect on a fifties album. Nowhere near essential to me. (for a killer Little Richard album - find the Greatest Hits Recorded Live album. Live at the Okeh Club. Which was actually recorded live in a studio. Strong material, and Richard is totally "on". The best versions ever of some of those songs,)
