Classic hard-science fiction
These books, and the first one in particular, are hard science fiction classics. Having both books, as well as the associated short stories and an essay on the 'making' of the heavy planet makes for an excellent compendium. Science fiction at its very best.

A very readable and complete history
This is a highly detailed, but highly readable book. I had no idea when I ordered it that it would delve into the things it does. As well as its detailed and unbiased coverage of the campaigns, battles, leaders,and ships that you would expect, it explains very well the economic and cultural issues behind the RN's sorry state when hostilities commenced, and the struggles to overcome those problems.
It is generally strategic in its coverage, but it does go into the tactics of battle, and it does not neglect to remind the reader of the impact on the sailors, soldiers and airmen of the many poor decision made by Admiralty and Parliament as they scrambled to resist and turn the Axis expansion.
You will find many reviews for this book on line by people better placed to do so than me, so I will leave this now with one further comment: if the history of the RN in WW2 interests you, then you should not be without this book.

Must have for Built to Spill and Halo Benders fans
I doubt that anyone other than Built to Spill and Halo Benders fans will love this, but love it they will. For me, Virginia Reels Around the Fountain is a standout, and Randy Describes Eternity is not far behind. Raw, fresh, no frills rock. Love it.
