CHAPMAN VACUUM HYDRO ASPIRATOR FILTER PUMP / HUMBOLDT H12020

    good strong vacuum
Provided water pressure is enough, it pulls a really strong vacuum- much better than our "house" vacuum lines. I evacuated a 50 ml syringe in the extended position, closed off the connection, and let the plunger go- it went right to the bottom, with only a little bubble of air under the rubber, I estimat 5% or less of atmospheric pressure. And the threaded connection is just right foaur our lab spigots.

Tiny pump works like a champ
I'm using it to circulate cold water through a spectrophotometer sample chamber. Small body with suction cups makes it easy to locate, doesn't take up much space. Tygon tubing fits over the ports for connection. Like all rotary pumps, it does need to have fluid in the pump before it can develop significant suction, so needs some kind of one-time pump priming- draw water through with a syringe or mount the pump below the level of the reservoir it is pumping from. You need a 6-12 V source but doesn't need to be regulated or exact. I found an old wall-wart type 12V power supply from some long-discarded piece of junk, didn't even cut the plug-jack off to splice the wires but just bent one lead of the pump into a hairpin and pressed it into the center, taped the other lead outside, secured all with more tape. If I remember correctly you do have to get the polarity right- but no damage from connecting it wrong. Just try both ways. Plugged the wall-wart transformer into a jack on the back of the instrument that is live when the instrument is turned on. Gets slightly warm if run dry, but I suspect it could run dry indefinitely without overheating. It is very quiet- I can barely hear it even with the spectrophotometer turned off. I still need to check for electromagnetic noise since I have it close to the photomultiplier, but just by eyeballing the spectra don't seem to be any noisier.

At that price I expected it would be a photocopy, but this was the original!
