A third extraordinary yarn-spinner and explorer of the human mind.
Those readers who are spoiled to the excellence of Ruth Rendell and P.D.James will be delighted to find a third writer who is curiously similar to their caliber and durability. Though each has her own distinct style, they have in common an understanding of the mental workings of the human animal. They know that the ordinary mind is capable of the most extraordinary acts and thought processes. They are "why-dunnit" writers of the most polished sort.
Highsmith, of the three, is perhaps more inclined to fantasy, less interested in legal proceedures and the exact workings of law, more apt to create metaphors with non-human creatures if it suits her story. She reaches into the dark corners of ignorance or intellect
with a steady, unfailing hand. She never sweetens or condemns or excuses or forgives. She is a delicious, rich terrifying feast for the senses.Put her short stories beside the other two, with impunity. Her work belongs there.

Impeccable gifts
1 of 1 found this helpful There are two books that should be read every year during the holiday season. They have nothing to do with any religion, and everything to do with the essence of the human spirit.
One is "A Child's Christmas In Wales' and the other is "A Christmas Memory". In the midst of holiday frenzy and celebration, one should find a quiet corner and, undisturbed, read both.
They are slender little volumes, not at all alike, and neither will take much of your time, but
for every holiday afterward, you will remember, and want to read again, the two stories . You will give them as impeccable gifts, often in pairs, and they will become part of the explanation and reason for why we celebrate seasons and changes . They will fortify our own memories and remind us of what we treasure,

A charming pair
The inexpensive paper dragons give a delightful effect in decorating for Chinese New Year. The head and feet
are well done graphically, and the honeycomb tissue body is flexible and light weight. They are sturdy enough to store for next year, if handled carefully. The colors are festive and bright and children respond to them with glee.
