Joseph Conrad Nostromo (Hardback) Everyman's Library CLASSICS (UK IMPORT)
    Jun 09, 2025
Is Nostromo Joseph Conrad's masterpiece? I'm about to find out.
As I have not yet read Nostromo, I must limit myself to remarking upon the very fine edition published by Everyman's Library. The overall appearance of this volume is quite impressive. The handsome dust jacket features a detail from a painting by John Warwick Smith. The introduction is by Tony Tanner and if it's as interesting and informative as the ones found in other Everyman's editons then it will add an additional dimension to the work itself. I have already read some of Joseph Conrad's shorter works including Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer so if Nostromo is anything like those excellent works then I'll be very rewarded indeed! In preparing for this novel I've referred to a review in Clifton Fadiman's Lifetime Reading Plan that I found very helpful. He says that Nostromo "is not an easy novel to read and it is best to take it slowly. Into it Conrad put his most anxious effort, and if he has a masterpiece this is probably it."
Oliver Twist: Introduction by Michael Slater (Everyman's Library Classics
    May 19, 2025
Everyman's edition of Oliver Twist is outstanding!
I especially like the overall design of the book. I was very impressed with the introduction by Michael Slater. His scholarly knowledge Dickens and his works adds a welcomed addition to the overall experience. Indeed, being newly acquainted with Everyman's Library, the introductions to these volumes already purchased are outstanding. I absolutely love the layout of the title page. Also other notable features are the cloth bindings, the dust jacket art and (of course) the Chronology listings. Bravo!
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Everyman's Library) by Stevenson, Robert Louis
    Jun 24, 2025
A handsome edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's short works. Excellent!
In addition to "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", I was pleasantly surprised to find "The Body-Snatcher" and four additional stories. I was unfamiliar with those stories and I will be anxious to delve into RLS uncharted territory. I always find the introductions to the Everyman series to be both entertaining and informative and the introduction to this volume by Nicholas Rance to no exception.
