Israel Putnam: Pioneer, Ranger, and Major-General, 1718-1790 (Classic Reprint)

Bravery, Selflessness & Patriotism
A common farmer who thought not if himself but of his Country. His ability and intensity to serve the cause of freedom was an inspiration to the thousands of his countrymen. From Connecticut he was promoted for his ingenuity and bravery. Fighting for the British during the French and Indian Wars ( 7 years war) with Rogers Rangers only to show true patriotism as the young Nation fought to expel the British from the Colonies. Never letting his beliefs of self-rule and freedom be diminished with early defeats at Ticonderoga. He lost friends and suffered personal set-backs as a few of his children died as he fought seperated for many months from the tasks of planting and harvesting. Using his rhetoric to keep a volunteer militia intact when our Nation had no Continental army. George Washington saw that this man was a strong ally who brought coordination, strategic expertise to the many campaigns Washington needed for plans to remove the British controls of Canada,New England and the Southern Colonies. As Putnam aged into his early sixties there wascan enevitabilitybif his experiences conflicting with the necessary broader strategy the Continental Congress needed for victory. Putnam's focus sometimes to narrow but always well meaning and with intensity drew ire from Washington. But when you speak about Breeds Hill and Bunker Hill heros, Putnam or Old Put, as he was cslled stood above and with Dr. Joseph Warren and others....riding his lathered horse up and down the battle line formations exhaulting a volunteer militia who lacked weapons, artillery and basic gun powder to give Americans the faith that this young Country can have success against one of the World's best equipped armies. Putnam's life had a travelog that we could not imagine as he snd his Connecticut militia travrled begire the War of Indrpendence to fight in Cuba with the Mother Country of England to take Havana from the Spaniards. He fought early on to remove the British years later from Montreal and Quebec in Canada and tried to neutralize the British control of the Hudson Valley and New York. Putnam was a tireless soldier whose ability to lead men and organize a new army was a tremendous weapon that strengthened our new Republic. His ability to ride his horse 20-30-40 miles when time to act short snd immediate action for responding to changing military scenarios a legend. One example of his unique approach was an episode when his regiments had no cannon balls to load for an iffensive. He baited the British to fire upon him and his militia knowing the safe distance a projectile could have sny effects and gathered the 125 cannonballs that rolled and stuck harmlessly in the sand and ground around his troops to load and return fire using the British own armaments against them. Age takes it toll..As the young Nation had later successes and the support of the French, Putnam's narrow focus at times irritated Washington who required immediate responses to his directives that Putnam delayed to follow. Yet, Washington understood the lifelong service this patriot gave. Irritations ecisted but never disrespect for a man of the common peoplw...this farmer who saw his life as one if service and adventure to olant the seeds of independence that gsve birth to our new nation. Excerpts from various letters and journals add a winderful intimacy to this well written story of the new nation's struggles, sacrifices and eventual victory. I recommend anyone who desires a personal view of history to read this close-up account of General Putnam and a man who rose above his early humble beginnings to give his life to a cause greater then himself.
Papillon (P.S.) by Charriere, Henri

Redemption is a Road to Travel
As usual the book was a more complete and entertaining story than the excellent movie staring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. The true story covered many more escapes and adventures from the planning and building of many boats and navigation intricacies to the people he met and their cultures and stories. The island tribe where he lived for 6 months that was covered in fifteen minutes in the movie to the deep appreciation of God as interpreted by Henri Charriere....His observations about people who helped him and those who punished him. The laws of captivity and the interactions of his fellow captives in prison. If you enjoyed the movie (which I did) this book will open a fuller deeper world to you of the trials and tribulations Papillon experienced to be free. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share his life and be forever impressed with one man whose desire to be free was exhilarating. You may not approve of some of the compromises necessary to survive but prison law is different than civil law.
