I come from a Pro-Treaty family and never appreciated De Valera until I read this book.
Declaring Neutrality and actually having combatant nations honor that neutrality are two very different things. De Valera, of course, was correct in his declaration of Neutrality, for very obvious and necessary reasons; but what is not as obvious, is the reality that Ireland had to convince the world that Ireland's Neutrality was real and had to be respected for neutrality to work. And, that it took such tremendous skill and determination on the part of De Valera, and his ministers, in a nation that had a great number if dissident political currents within the body politic, those in agreement but lacking understanding of the complexities and those in total disagreement who felt he was selling out to the English by not aligning Ireland with England's foes, is where the appreciation De Valera, for the man himself, can now bee seen. I recommend this book to anyone who has a hardened prejudice against De Valera because the truth will set you free.
