It works!
Old one failed and the new one works. The battery hasn't run down since. Easy to diagnose. While engine is running in neutral at a midrange rpm, ground to green wire to the starter/generator. The generator should begin to charge at a voltage 13v to 15v. If it doesn't the generator is bad.

Great variac
Bought it to control treadmill and other dc motors, with an additional rectifier. Much better control over speed range that the less expensive options.
