A laptop legend only really held back by its GPU.
I've used many of these laptops and they make great preowned budget workstations, especially if you don't rely on graphics for 3D modelling and gaming.
They would be perfect budget workhorses for people who need a decent amount of mobile processing power, including music producers and video editors on a budget. These have CPUs up to 4910mq and I believe possibly the MX versions as well, but even the 4900mq is the business. It took intel a 4 subsequent generations to really make an improvement in mobile performance (aside from power efficiency). The keyboards are loads better than the competition and is made for typing a lot. The trackpad will be hated by trackpoint users, but everyone else would be ok with it once it's set up and used right.
The T540p is the big brother to the famous hot rod laptop mod project T440p and thus share the same if not more upgrade options including CPU, 4 RAM slots, 2-3 SSDs, trackpad, 3k Display, Extended Battery etc. The GT730m was probably outdated on launch and I don't understand why it was used in such an expensive machine, they are step up from the igpu of that era but still nothing to mention.
Build quality is pretty good, pretty much what you'd expect from more modern T series but I don't understand why they designed this as a separate model to the even bigger W540 when this is already almost as chunky as my P50 which is way more machine in the package (although 2 generations newer).
Battery life is pretty bad and you'd need the very un-ergonomic 9-cell extended battery if you need to be on the move a lot.
Honestly though, this is the last of an era as far as user-modifiable laptops. Great machine overall if you need something moderately powerful on a budget and don't care about looks and portability.

Good value but with some inconvenient issues

Ok, the bad news first:
The right side tabs on almost all of these do not fit deeply enough to secure the package.
I was able to somewhat resolve this by gently pressing out the tabs and the hole it goes into to ensure an actual fit. Using some tape also helps. However, even with it not fitting properly, the box seems secure once it's fully assembled. Also, the boxes nearer the ends of the package may be damaged in shipping.
Good news:
All other aspects of quality of the boxes are very good, and the price was very reasonable.
