Beefy volume of classic Golden Age stories.
Of all of the DC Golden Age Simon and Kirby characters the Sandman was always my least favorite. I purchased this volume to round out the collection and discovered a treasure trove of early S&K nuggets. According to the introduction by John Morrow, some of the reprints in the 1970s, with which I was familiar, suffered from poor reproduction and that clouded my previous impression of this work. The digital reproduction in this volume is much better and serves the nearly 75 year old material well.
This was the first assignment that S&K tackled after the switch from Timely, and the initial similarities to their work on Captain America is immediately apparent. It is particularly interesting to observe the development of the art and writing as S&K mature right before your eyes from one end of the book to the other. In particular the writing becomes more sophisticated and the art gains a slickness that is intriguing. At the start of the run the characters could easily be Captain America and Bucky in a different costume. However, as S&K find their footing this series of stories gains its own particular personality.
Students of the Golden Age of comics in general and S&K in particular should not overlook this volume. Sandman is a unique and underappreciated chapter in the storied careers of two of the legends of comics.

Jack Kirby creative content packs a punch.
Spectacular peek behind the curtain at the dawn of Marvel's Silver Age. Art content by creative dynamo Jack Kirby, the driving force behind notable comics properties such as Captain America, Silver Surfer, Black Panther, Inhumans, Eternals, Darkseid, and the New Gods. Note that many of the stories were signed "Kirby and Ayers" indicating that Kirby provided the script in addition to the plot and pencil art. This is a must have for any serious student of the genre.

A blast of a Golden Age book! Great read.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy some of the best stories from the 1940s. The printing is a little dark and muddy. It looks like the process was to shoot the digital copy from the original and then color over the top to produce the finished product. Not as clear as the S& K romance titles from another publisher. Still the best chance to relive these classics.
