Dark, brooding and deep which will touch you inside
I have been a fan of the band since about 93-94, I had first bought this CD in August 95 just as they were fragmenting for the first time. It is a slow burner for the uninitiated but from the outset it is clear there is a mixture of quiet thought, anger, joy, introspection and sadness. I know that this may not make you want to buy it but I always found that it was an album for listening to on your own, there are some really really powerful moments in this album ranging from soft and sweet to some of the most powerful and angry guitar in the world. It is quite an emotional album and it means alot to me personally. I always felt that the Verve made there albums in reverse. Urban Hymns should have been their first - crowd pleasing. A northern soul would have been the difficult but fantastic second album and A storm in heaven, their third album, would have been their selfish wandering soundscape.
I cannot recommend this album highly enough. I do appreciate that it is not for everyone, but please give it patience. There are fantastic lyrics and sentiment throughout. Please buy it and enjoy it for yourself.
I have re-bought it because I just had to.
