Suspect Seals
I hate this seal kit. The prop shaft and downshaft seals are marketed as replacements for the OMC originals, but they really don't perform nearly as well. Looking at the originals and these seals side by side, the OMC seals are thick-lipped, with probably 1/2" sealing surface, and these reproductions are just single-lip seals with maybe 1/16" sealing surface. I'm honestly not even sure the seal springs are stainless. A better replacement would have been double-lip seals, especially on the prop shaft seal, which is the only thing keeping water out of the gearbox. Modern outboard gearboxes have two or more single or double-lip seals.
I did end up using them for the time being, but I'll probably be tearing my gearcase apart again at the end of this season to get rid of these suspect seals.

Good Quality, Didn't Fit
These breaker points seem to be of very high quality, but they did not fit my motor as they should have. The OMC part number 581207 is supposed to be a supersession of 580148, but it isn't. Note these will NOT fit a 1956 Johnson 30 with a stock armature plate.

Mostly Good Performance
If you're here looking for a 12v starter for a 1956 Johnson 30, take note: this starter will work, but NOT with the Johnson starter bracket for the 6v starter. The difference is in the bolt pattern on the underside of the bracket, the way the starter is attached to the bracket itself. These bolts are too wide and only fit the Evinrude Big Twin bracket of the same vintage. I did a 12v electric start conversion on a '56 Johnson 30 which was originally pull start only, got all my parts together including the elusive Johnson starter bracket, went to install this starter, and was unpleasantly surprised to find that it didn't fit. Luckily I had an Evinrude Big Twin parts motor in the garage and was able to use the bracket from that, only difference is it doesn't have the spike for the shroud mounting, not a big deal as long as your three other mounts are in good shape.
The good news is that this starter is an absolute champ. Spools my Johnson 30 right up. The only gripe I have about the starter's performance is that the bendix doesn't always fully retract, and this occasionally leads to the bendix and flywheel binding together, which will elicit only a solenoid click when you go to start next time. You'll have to remove the shroud and use a screwdriver to wedge the two apart.
