Death In Ancient Egypt
I was expecting very little from this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Being a book from the 80s, I felt that it couldn't match more recent books. It is a book for the general reader, not the specialist. Someone with a general knowledge of Egypt would find it interesting and enlightening. Beginners would also find a lot of useful information, but might be thrown off a little when suddenly, the name of a 1st dynasty king is mentioned.
On the whole, the book is well written. The chapters stick to their themes, and the concepts are elucidated nicely. I particularly liked his use of pragmatic definitions of metaphysical terms such as "ba" and "ka". The author shows a genuine interest in explaining the meaning of the ideas about death as the concept changed during Egypt's long history. The author does not talk down to his readers, but rather communicates the basic ideas of the theme. I frankly enjoyed the book.

MULTIMEANING POETRY
FROST WAS A POET LAUREATE UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1963. HE GAVE A SPEECH AT JFK'S INAUGURATION. HIS POETRY CONTAINS AT LEAST 2 LEVELS OF INTERPRETATION- ONE LITERAL, THE OTHER METAPHORICAL. HE WROTE ABOUT EVERYDAY THEMES, BUT AT THE SAME TIME ELEVATED THEM FROM THEIR SIMPLE, EVERYDAY MEANING.

Ancient Egypt on a Disc
1 of 1 found this helpful This disc is a very good value, containing lots of great information on ancient Egypt. I can find lots of new info in these old books. The basic drawbacks are two: 1. It co9ntains lots of material is found in every ancient Egypt disc collection; & as expected, much of the info is dated & wrong by today's standards. Budge's system of interpretation is clearly outdated- many of his hieroglyphic sounds are wrong, & his interpretation of basic concepts reflects late 19th & early 20th century ideas rather than the ancient Egyptian ones, but he includes incredible hieroglyphic inscriptions that are very difficult or much costlier to obtain elsewhere. The Egyptian phonological errors are also found in many other books in the collection.
There is an air of fascination with these old books, an excitement transmitted by the authors, that characterizes early studies. Hieroglyphic inscriptions are included that cannot be found anywhere else. The illustrations impart a mysterious air, so they are of interest & value in themselves. Also, one can trace the beginnings of certain ideas & tendencies in Egyptology through reading these books. The study of the Egyptian concept of the soul finds its scientific basis here, even though the interpretation of that system is different today.
The main value for me are the hieroglyphic inscriptions themselves, not the outmoded interpretations. Good modern introductory books exist for those who are looking for the first time. However, for those who seek to understand Egypt as it was being archaeologically discovered, this is a good start.
