Family of Spies : Inside the John Walker Spy Ring by Earley, Pete
    Sep 27, 2019
The Story and Mind of a Spy; a True Story
John A Walker was a spy for some 17 years, providing the Soviets access to our top military secrets—the ability to read our classified message traffic. He is most notable, however, for recruiting his own family members—his kids and his brother—along with his best navy friend, to form his spy ring. Author Pete Earley spent hundreds of hours interviewing John Walker, his family, associates, and investigators. The story is fascinating—a glimpse into the psychology of a master manipulator, who had no moral code other than his own ego, and his quest for money and his flamboyant lifestyle. John Walker stole —or directed the theft of—cryptographic materials and Top Secret documents, and gave them directly to the KGB in both overseas clandestine meetings in Vienna (mostly) or through domestic country road dead drops near Washington DC. He encouraged his children to follow in his footsteps by joining the military so as to continue a perpetual stream of classified information to the USSR—our Cold War adversary. I enjoy Pete Earley’s writing style. I recently read his “Confessions of a Spy”, the true story of CIA traitor Aldrich Ames, based on jailhouse interviews with Ames himself.
Killer Spy: The Inside Story of the FBIs Pursuit
    Sep 11, 2019
Great Story of CIA Traitor Aldrich Ames
Killer Spy Is an excellent account with unique insight of the FBI investigation of Aldrich “Rick” Ames. Killer Spy is one of three books that I can recommend about Rick Ames. The other two are Circle of Treason, by Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille—the CIA story of how Ames was identified; and Confessions of a Spy, by Pete Early—based on in-depth personal interviews with Ames and interviews with former KGB officers. These three books, told from different perspectives—FBI, CIA, and Ames himself—will give as complete as possible the history and unique profile of the worst spy (mole) in CIA history. Ames’ betrayals were responsible for as many as a dozen executions of our agents in the USSR & Russia.
