Great cane, but requires modification to rate 5 stars
8 of 8 found this helpful I carry a cane due to a hostile fire helicopter shootdown that left me with 6 trashed disks and spinal related nerve damage in my left leg. Also, I like canes because of self defense aspect (65 y/o, but still Soldier for Life). Review of 3 canes in COMPARISON, STRENGHS+WEAKNESSES, and SOLUTION format.
COMPARISONS:
Cane 1: standard medical assist cane - fiberglass - light and strong, but curve in handle too tight which hampers use for self defense - least expensive.
Cane 2: KA-BAR - all metal - heavy and slow for fast strikes - built like a tank - curve on handle perfect for self defense - more expensive than Cane 3: United Cutlery cane.
Cane 3 (and primary focus of review): United Cutlery Defense Hook Cane - poly composition - light and strong - perfect weight for fast strikes - easily shortened for body height - curve on handle same as KABAR, but (PROBLEM) handle longer causing the end of the hook to painfully hit the wrist if twirling.
SOLUTION - remove approx 1 inch of materiel from the end of the handle of the United Cutlery cane and match to KA-BAR pointed tip. This maintains same pressure point tip at the end of the handle while reducing the overall length of the handle. I can now twirl the UC cane like a high school cheerleader, but sorry boys, I'm already married.
My EDC cane is the United Cutlery cane, but I'm emailing a copy of this review to the company. The designer, "Night Watchman", obviously did little field testing.
