The Shadow of His Wings by Gereon Goldmann (2000, Paperback, Revised)

Amazing survival story!
This autobiography is easy to read. It's hard to put it down. The events which came together to accomplish Gods plan were shown to be clearly providential (and choreographed) to achieve Gods purposes. The author was in danger of death on a daily basis, for many years during the war, and periodically during his POW days. It is hard to fathom a seminarian being drafted into the SS, and then not being killed by those Nazis within the SS, who hated religion, Catholicism, faith, and especially priests, monks, nuns, and bishops. Gereon was fearless and was always looking to what God would want in any given situation. In those cases he did very little to reduce his exposure and risks. Gereon is a "larger than life" persona. He was tall and imposing and did not hesitate when he needed to fight for a cause. Nor did he back down when threatened. Whether it was knocking out a bully with a crashing fist or pulling a gun on an uncooperative churchman, he was ready to do what needed to be done and he did so without a lot of fore thought.
