Army of Darkness - US Theatrical Release DVD
Ask any splatoon afficiando worth his salt and he'll tell you without the slightest hesitation that this particlar flick is the "Citizen Kane" of our generation. Although several versions of Army of Darkness are in circulation, this one makes a great gift for newbies if you're turning them onto the genre for the first time. Although the Boomstick Edition is more befitting for the experienced Evil Dead fanatic, the U.S. Theatrical Release eases the newcomer into the water, and provides them with a sound basis in Campbellology. Taking an ED virgin and hitting them with the original Evil Dead is like showing up for Driver's Ed class in highscool and finding out that you'll be driving a Formula One at Indy that day; sure it's possible, but the average Joe just couldn't cope and would implode. In a perfect world, Bruce Campbell would be at his ranch polishing his Academy Awards at this very moment. Unfortunately, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science has a tendency to favor crap like "Chariots of Boredom" and "Million-Dollar Labia". If you haven't seen this flick, drop what you're doing and get it NOW! Watch chainsaw-wielding Ash retrieve the Necronomicon, hack the deadites and nail the Princess all in one day while cracking wise simultaneously. This is also Sam Raimi's breakout flick and the one that transitioned him from King of Low Budget Horror to King of High Budget everything. I can honestly say I've seen the movie more than 200 times and while that may seem excessive please keep in mind that it keeps me off the streets. The out-takes and alternative ending are just as amazing as what was left in the film and strangely enough, the other night the film was featured on AMC (American Movie Classics) right along side Citizen Kane and Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart. Can I call it or what? Oh yeah, one more thing. Hail to the King Baby.
