LAST RARE 1953 ROADWAY EXPRESS Ford C600 Freight Truck - First Gear
    Oct 28, 2018
First Gear 1/34 scale diecast 1953 Ford C600 box truck
This model was made by First Gear in the mid-1990's and is 1/34 scale in diecast metal. The truck modeled is a 1953 Ford C600 COE (cab over engine) medium duty gasoline engine truck with a box van body. The 1953 Ford truck was a significant redesign of the F-series COE trucks made in 1948-52 but still retained the non-tilt COE design where engine access was through a short bulbous hood and through removal of the doghouse enclosure in the truck cab. The C600 would have had an inline 6 or V8 gasoline engine, in 1953 this was the last year of the flathead engine. This model has a V8 emblem on the grille. The C600 Ford truck was replaced with a boxy steel tilt cab after 1957. This model is a typical high quality First Gear truck model although this 1953 Ford is slightly below the detail of other First Gear 1/34 scale trucks. The windshield wipers are not molded with the windshield as in nearly EVERY other First Gear model but the wipers are molded with the truck cab body and so end up unrealistically flat and painted the same color as the truck body. The small emblems on the side of the hood are also not well defined. The box truck body is probably the least detailed and least interesting, with no opening doors or detail fittings. As common to all the 1/34 scale First Gear trucks with steel disk wheels, the disk wheels are not as detailed as they could be. The wheel hubs are molded the same color, the lug nuts are not distinct, and the ventilation holes are not cut out or at least painted black for highlighting. But overall this remains a high-quality diecast model. This version of the First Gear 1/34 scale diecast 1953 Ford C600 box truck features the colors and logo for Roadway Express, which by the 1990's was the second largest motor carrier in the United States, with 26,000 employees and 400 truck terminals, but is no longer in operation today. The company was founded by the Roush brothers in Akron, Ohio in 1930. A subsidiary evolved into FedEx Ground, and in 2002 Roadway Express was acquired by Yellow Freight.

    no historical value here
The predecessor to Coastal Corporation was not founded until 1955 so there is no-way a 1920 tank truck would be marked for Coastal, and the graphics style and colors are 1990's Coastal livery. The Ford coupe supposedly represents Oscar Wyatt's car for selling drill bits in the early 1950's and so may have a small amount of interest. All in all, these are value-less souvenir items only with no historical value.

    not historically accurate freight truck
This model is a contrived souvenir type item rather than an accurate historical freight line. These very nicely done First Gear models of the 1953 Kenworth three-axle tractor with trailer would be better if there were more historical fallen-flag carriers and fewer souvenir items.
