Sexiest lens ever!
I tested it for a few days. It is very well constructed, so it will last a lifetime. Images are sharp corner to corner regardless of aperture. This used to be a lens that all journalists carry in their bag until the AF version came out. I personally like better the aesthetics of this one, and this one has only 5 elements compared with 8 of the next versions. I highly recommend it! You won't be disappointed. Just get a minty used one since there are a lot of these that are a little beat up (journalists...), but even if it's beat up, the image quality should be the same.

1 of 1 found this helpful I bought this lens as a replacement for my 24-70. At first I was skeptical about it, especially since there are so many people that say this "isn't sharp". To my surprise this lens is very sharp! Yes it is a bit soft in the corners but nothing that you should be concerned about. If you are willing to pay 2x more go for the 24-70, but you honestly won't be getting much more... Trust me I owned it.
The best photographers in the world don't care about absolute sharpness, and you should be using primers and not zooms if you do photography professionally. This lens is amazing in its own spectrum. Personally I find the extra 15mm much handier for walking around, and the macro feature is an incredible tool to have available. If you want better results for macro or 1:1 reproduction then you should get a macro lens.
I only gave it 4 stars because my complaint is that the zoom ring sticks... Construction overall is not like other D series lenses with metal and very precise controls. This is mostly plastic and the zoom feel is not there because it isn't smooth.
This is my walk around/travel lens. It doesn't disappoint me. I'll carry this and a prime telephoto like my 135 DC or 180mm 2.8. If I travel I take this and a 50 1.8 for low light and a 105 ai-s for reach. Buy it!

It is a tank. Super well built, so it can’t take a lot of damage. It is also super precise if you have to use the zoom ring and it simply always works! The focus is very fast and precise.
Picture quality is pretty close to perfect. It almost performs as good as a prime, and it is sharp corner to corner. A bit of distortion if that concerns you, but the best part about this lens is its constant output. The pictures look sharp regardless of focal length or aperture setting. That makes it very reliable, especially for a professional photographer.
Yes it is a bit bulky.... only if you compare it to other lenses of its same focal length, but a small price you have to pay for the reliability of this lens. Speaking of low price, although this lens was overpriced at the beginning, since the release of the VR version, this one has dropped in price dramatically and for what I heard it is not as good as this one ;-)
You won’t be disappointed if you don’t mind spending the money on it. It’s also a phenomenal travel lens
