Yeast is alive!
Just got the package. Opened it, added a teaspoon to warm water with a little honey. Foaming in no time flat. Yeast is good, living, and functional. Lots of people have been complaining about expired stock or dead fakes on several sites during this Coronavirus pandemic but this one is good and a value compared to some other opportunists out there.

Blown plate amp. What to do?
So I have a great 12" Velodyne forward-firing sub with a whole lot of features I don't need: a mic for adjustment, a remote control, an LED display, and so on. Well, the plate amp on this thing just went kaput. Should I buy a new comparable sub for $700+? Should I send in the plate amp for a repair gamble? (Note: Google shows my sub has a poor repair record for the plate amp.) Nah...I can do a few mods myself.
So looking at replacement plate amps; most look like junk. And a pain to fit in the sub. And subject to the vibration that damages plate amps. And many have the pop when they turn off. I like the sound that my Velodyne sub box and driver produce, and that's 3/4 of the challenge, right?
Well, I find the Model 500 at a good price on eBay and with a five-year warranty. That's way longer than a repaired Velodyne plate amp, and much longer than a replacement plate amp. Plus being external, it allows flexibility in future subwoofer mods. For the price. how can you beat it? Just seal up the back of the sub and put binding posts on it (replacing the plate amp) and we're good, right? I'm handy, I can do this! Sure, I lose all those other fancy features...but I wasn't using them anyway.
Well...I did that and my system sounded pretty poor with the System 500 amp. The amp sounded weak and the bass thin. But then I remembered that I had an Onkyo surround receiver that adjusted the entire environment via a microphone and a system they call "Audyssey." I went ahead and ran the amp calibration and when I was done, gave things another listen.
Holy cow, a world of difference. This sub amp was far smoother and precise than the original plate amp (likely the reason that the main amp needed recalibration). This Velodyne never has sounded better. The bass is smooth, powerful without being punchy, yet still a tight balanced sound that does not sound out-of-sorts with the rest of the system. I've only got the thing at 1/6 volume and the level is perfect in my big room. Classical, rock, movies...all has the tight bass that I appreciate (and that most people forsake for a big thud).
Now, this review is based upon my hearing and my sound preferences, and of course the properties of my modified Velodyne sub and amplifier and how they sound shape. But for less than a new subwoofer, and without any of the power off pops that plague replacement plate amps (according to reviews), this brought my system back to life. (Along with a little handiwork of my own to mod the existing sub.) But not only does is sound amazing, but I have options for future system growth. Second sub? Check. In-wall sub? Check.
The only negative of this amp is the propensity for the power light to become inoperative when in auto mode. Other than that, I consider this an upgrade to the original Velodyne plate amp.
