Trouble installing update.

Generally, I like the Mac. However I’ve ran into a problem, updating the operating system. Everytime I try to install the update, I get a message saying that I don’t have the space available, to do so. I’ve tried 3 or 4 times, without success. I could definitely use some expert help.
