Use your Imagination
The 1821 is a low mintage,scarce item, even in low grades. Raw coins are very difficult to value, as many large cents were abused and damaged throughout their history of use. (Pennies were treated more badly then than now. Now we rarely pick one off the ground.) Damaged coins (corroded, holed, bent, counter-punched, scratched, hammered, improperly cleaned) are commonly offered for sale at discounted prices as hole-fillers in collections. The higher grades are rare and valuable. The abused coins hold much more history and stimulate the imagination - where have they traveled in the past?
