(T194) Walton: Symphony No. 1; Variations on a Theme by Hindemith (CD, EMI)
    Jan 07, 2022
    Another gem from Vernon Handley
Sir William Walton's "Variations on a Theme by Hindemith" is a work hitherto unknown to me but what Walton does with Hindemith's original melody renders justice to the source. Vernon Handley leads a performance of the First Symphony that achieves near-psychotic intensity in the first two movements and deserves to be ranked in the top tier with Previn/LSO (RCA) and Thomson (Chandos). Do not confuse it with Handley's ASV recording with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. *That* performance means well but the Liverpool PO is not up to the task, unlike the Bournemouth SO here. A great acquisition.
Major Dundee (Blu-ray, 1965). Arrow Limited Edition. Brand New.

Superb reissue of cursed Peckinpah film
While "Major Dundee" is the 'lost masterpiece' that some claim it to be, it's good to have it in a version that more closely approaches writer/director Sam Peckinpah's intentions. As good as the Sony issue was, Arrow's is even better, offering three (!) commentary tracks, a lavish souvenir booklet, a foldout poster (suitable for framing), as well as both the producer's and the studio's cuts of the film. In addition to two new commentary tracks, novel to the Arrow release are a documentary by Mike Siegel, etc.
Delibes: Lakmé (Philadelphia, Nov. 1968) Sutherland, Vrenios (2CD, BV 2007)

    Sutherland in her element
Despite being an in-house recording, this "Lakmé" is in excellent sound and boasts generous bonus content. Only a broken CD-case hinge detracts from my enjoyment of the product.
