great value for my 110000$ almost reference system..
does exactly what i want it to; sits atop the tube preamp and keeps the tubes well ventilated; usually when on about 88 degrees; but on my two tube mono block amps, the two units are cooling tubes from about 95 degrees; which is optimum...having bought one here and two elsewhere, same price, all came within a few days of ordering....great price point and value.

One of the Best from the 70s
i have owned a 5420 since 1975 or 76...it was a key part of my first stereo systems; works as designed; marantz is a good build quality product...i liked the panpot aspect to move the sound stage where i wanted it (Gary Wright/Dream Weaver)...it has the typical hiss one would expect on tape with processed signal paths...the only thing to ever go wrong with my deck was the cassette door open/ejection button failed...and to this day, is still failed...it's a beautiful unit; only marantz can make a VU meter look that good (sorry McIntosh)...at the price point of $500, its about what it cost in the 70s....so, with inflation, it's more like you are actually only paying about $100US for the unit, if even that...It's a nice legacy piece; a nice "back to the future" for an outdated medium of music recording...but for us baby boomers....it's a beauty and a keeper....i'd buy it, but i want to get a Nakamichi Dragon instead....for sure, in a different class and price point, but an affordable option. Marantz has always made very good equipment; not sure any of it rates as audiophile quality...but very very listenable...
