OTHER SCHOLARS HAVE INDEPENDENTLY ARRIVED AT THE SAME ANSWER FOR SOMA
Dr. Andrew McDonald has come to the same findings as Spess and says so in his detailed article published in 2004: A Botanical Perspective on the Identity of Soma (Nelumbo Nucifera Gaertn.) Based on Scriptural and Iconographic Records, (Economic Botany,. Volume 58, Issue 1, February 2005, Article: pp. S147-S173) See the link or past it into your browser: http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1663/0013-0001%282004%2958%5BS147%3AABPOTI%5D2.0.CO%3B2?prevSearch=soma&searchHistoryKey=&queryHash=06006d3d073c5f2451c373dece6ab233 Andrew McDonald, P.hD University of Texas at Austin, Plant Resources Center, 78712; E-mail: amcdon@mail.utexas.edu An examination of the mythic and artistic records of India and Southeast Asia indicates that the famous psychotropic of the ancient Aryans was the eastern lotus, Nelumbo nucifera. Vedic epithets, metaphors, and myths that describe the physical and behavioral characteristics of the `soma' plant as a sun, serpent, golden eagle, arrow, lightning bolt, cloud, phallic pillar, womb, chariot, and immortal navel, relate individually or as a whole to the eastern lotus. Since most Hindu and Buddhist gods and goddesses trace their origins from the Vedas and have always shared close symbolic associations with Nelumbo, there is reason to believe the divine status of this symbolic plant derives from India's prehistoric past. In 2006 A. B. Damania came to the same conclusions. Author: Damania, A.B. Title: The origin of soma -- another theory Publication date: 2006 Published in: Asian Agri-History 10, 3, 245p-248p. Description: The author proposes the lotus, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., as an appropriate candidate for soma. This is the same as Spess' earlier proposal in the year 2000. SUMMARY OF POINTS MADE IN THE BOOK "SOMA THE DIVINE HALLUCINOGEN": This book describes the ethnobotany of Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera (Gaertn.) and various water lilies including the Blue Water Lily (Nymphaea stellata Willd), etc., plants as they pertain to the Asvins Madhu/Soma drink in the Rgveda. The Asvins drink is mixed with the freshly pressed soma jucie at all three soma pressings, morning, noon, and dusk to create a soma admixture. In addition, one of the main premises of the book is to show that the ["Elixir Theory of Alchemy", a drinkable elixir], [not the transmutation of lead into gold theory of alchemy], originated in the haoma/soma sacrifices, especially the soma sacrifices in the Rgveda. Another major idea put forth in the book is that "western magic" was influenced by the Indo-Irainian haoma/soma sacrifical rituals. A large part of the book deals with the development of the subtle body (somakaya). It also deals with soma's influences on Hermeticism, Alchemy, Magic, Gnosticism, Daoism, Merkabah, Paranormal Activity, Miracles, Archaeoastronomy, Subtle Body, Magical rituals, etc. On the Psychoactivity of Nelumbo and Nymphaea Species see: The Lycaeum Forums: under Nymphaea vs. Nelumbo; Exploring the Sacred Lotus. This forum shows that Nelumbo species can be an HALLUCINOGEN when used as an admixture just like the Asvins Soma drink in the Rgveda as mentioned in the book. On Nymphaea see also the film on "Google Videos" called: "Sacred Weeds" - "Flower Power" - shows experiements with Nymphaea species"
