Enjoyable coming-of-age fantasy with great world building and characters
I loved this book. It's a somewhat typical coming of age fantasy story but I really enjoyed the author's voice - both the way he describes the world he's created and the way the characters interact with each other. The main character, Ileth, has a stutter that has made everyone look down on her for her entire life, but she proves herself to be smart, fiercely loyal, brave, and at times sarcastic. The dragons are also refreshingly real. It's easy to tell a story about the majesty of dragons and how wonderful it is to take care of them, but Knight describes the reality of carrying for them (including the need to clean left-over food from between their teeth and the horrific smells they often produce) and gives them rich and somewhat difficult personalities. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it.
