2/3 Failed
I bought 100 of these Austree cuttings to reinforce a replacement project for the 1000+ trees I lost in the Black Forest Colorado fire of 2013. I was excited to find some fast growing trees that seemed affordable. I did research, including asking the seller specific questions about growing them here in Colorado. The seller responded promptly to my questions. The problems started when I got the package in the mail containing the cuttings. They were so small (+- 1/8" in diameter) that I simply couldn't believe there were 100 cuttings in the bundle. The "detailed instruction" sheet I received was a 4" x 3" piece of colored paper that was wet, torn and mushy because it was packed right inside the bag with the wet cuttings (see photos attached). The back side of the instruction sheet was virtually unreadable. I immediately placed the cuttings in a bucket of water for the "Jump Start" phase. 2 weeks later, some of the cuttings had started rooting and even a few leaves had sprouted. While the cutting were soaking I built a drip irrigation system so each cutting had its own water source. I dug holes with a staggered arrangement as instructed, and I planted them in a mixture of 1/2 native soil and 1/2 locally sourced tree planting soil. I did NOT use fertilizer as instructed. I watered the planted cuttings religiously to keep them very wet as instructed. 3 months later, only 34 of the 100 cuttings have sprouted. The remaining 64 are graveyard dead. I contacted the seller asking for a refund or replacement but they rejected my claim outright without asking a single question. I understand plants can be temperamental but a 64% failure rate is way higher than should be expected. In the years since the fire, I've bought hundreds of tree seedlings from the Forest Service and I've had no more than a 20 - 25% failure rate with those seedings. The Austree cuttings that did survive seem to be doing well and I'm nursing them like babies. I'm just hugely disappointed in the 64 seedlings that never showed any signs of life whatsoever. And I'm disheartened by a seller that won't stand behind the products they sell. So, as they say, "caveat emptor" (buyer beware).
