Georgette Heyer's best historical novel!
Using the great grandchildren of the Duke of Avon who we met in "These Old Shades" and the grandchildren of the "Devil's Cub" as the leading characters of the novel, Heyer who was extremely knowledgeable about the history and details of the Regency era, masterfully tells the compelling tale of Waterloo. She details the military leaders and their struggles to mount armed forces, materials and equipment to meet Napoleon's resurgence. The characters and descriptions of each of the Generals, royalty and support staff were so well drawn that each one lived and enriched the story. The Waterloo battle was detailed and compelling. The reader is held on the edge of her seat as images of skirmishes; the agony of bloody losses; and the eventual triumph of the flagging army unfolds. Then Heyer brings the novel to an end as survivors come back to their families.
