Simple, compact, inexpensive and does the job.
This is the second one of these I bought. Perfect size for storing an SLR with medium size lens attached. Inexpensive and does the job. It is not crush proof. If I need that, I poof the case in a Pelican case

Basic low cost generic sensor does the job
The title says it all. Nothing fancy about the hc-sr04. They are sold everywhere for a couple bucks and are popular because they can keep a robot from running into a wall. If you calibrate these using a tape measure they are surprisingly accurate.

This older HP meter is a good balance of cost and performance
I needed a good accurate meter that was easy to calibrate and under $100. For me the 3478A hit the suite spot.
