Lid Won't Stay On

The lid will not stay on this shaker when it is being used. I was making a pot of chile. When I tried shaking some salt into the pot the lid fell off and dumped an entire container of salt into my chile. I scooped out as much as i could as fast as I could. but the salt sank to the bottom of the pot fast. The whole pot had to be thrown out.
