Fast charging, poor micro USB contact

I've long had trouble with my HTC M8 eventually losing contact with cables from multiple vendors unless I press down on the connection, but now the problem is showing up on my wife's Samsung Galaxy, which has never had problems before. I wish I could find a consistently good cable. Part of the problem is definite the phone.
