1984--very sobering, and especially relevant now.
I have just finished 1984, and look forward to reading the other works in the set. The set is in like new condition, in excellent shape, and the type face is extremely friendly to my eyesight.

Short, clearly written, and deep.
Hillaire Belloc was a brilliant essayist, poet and historian. His evaluation of the Great Heresies---Arianism, Islam, and Albigensianism are spot-on and informative. They are also extremely interesting, especially for someone interested in the history of the church and the medieval period. Of course, he was a devout and ardent Catholic, so this book is written from that viewpoint. He has two other chapters, on the Reformation and the modern age, and they too are interesting and helpful. He has little strictly critical to say about the Reformation, except to lament that it began with the good intention of reforming a Church badly in need of reform, but went too far and split Christendom wide apart. Some of this comments seem dated, but others are clearly prescient. I am a life-long Baptist, but have always respected Catholics and Catholicism, and it was refreshing to read this history from a great man of letters who hails from that much older branch of the faith. I highly recommend this book. It is short, written with an economy of words but with great depth of thought.

A brief but thorough analysis of the main ideas behind Western Civilization.
The author of this book, Anthony Esolen, is a learned, thoughtful and extremely able writer whose columns in various publications I have enjoyed reading over the years. In The Politically Incorrect Guide to Western Civilization he is at his best, analyzing the effect of Christianity, Judaism, the Greek emphasis on learning and reason, and the Roman Empire on medieval Europe and the ages since. He pulls no punches. His erudition and deep knowledge of history are on display throughout, and he writes plainly and with great force. I highly recommend this book, as I do anything written by its author.
