Does what its supposed to but not as good as expected
Firstly, the seller is/was excellent as my first one was replace free of charge without even returning it. Five stars to the seller.
Now the item.
I purchased this item mainly for the optical INPUT so I can transfer 'Minidiscs’ to my computer by optical/digital means.
As mentioned above, the first unit had to be replaced. All functions worked except the optical input, which was either silent or had a heavily distorted sound if I held the optical lead up to it rather than plugging the optical lead in. I tried different leads and different settings but no use.
The seller sent me a new replacement and didn’t even ask for the old one back. Excellent service.
The replacement worked ‘ok’, but the limitation is in the software which is quite difficult to use. It looks simple, but does not quite do what it says.
It does do what I wanted and that was to transfer my audio via optical cable to the computer, but it is limited in the bitrate/sample rate. I can only use 44.1khz and even though 48khz is listed it will not accept it.
I briefly used the unit on a Raspberry Pi for audio output. This works but every so often it will output an extremely loud ‘computer type’ noise instead of playing the audio track. This could cause damage to speakers connected to it and could certainly damage hearing when using headphones. It does this randomly. I don’t know if this is something to do with the Raspberry Pi or the unit itself, but I cannot trust it to work with the Raspberry Pi so won’t be using it for that.
The other inputs/outputs, surround sound channel outputs etc. I cannot comment on as I have not used these.
For what I got it for it works fine.
Analogue audio quality is good enough, digital transfer is perfect as it should be with digital.
If you don’t need the optical side of things then there are plenty of cheaper USB audio adapters around.
In my case, it was worth it for the optical input as there are not many devices that have this and certainly not for this price.

Does what it suposed to.
Very handy little converter.
It does exactly what it is supposed to do, converting HDMI to VGA and separate audio.
Connected to my Raspberry Pi and not only allowed me to use and old VGA monitor, but gave me quite fair quality audio output too.
No power required although it does get slightly warm after extended use.
For the price, can't fault it.

Small, cheap and powerful
1 of 1 found this helpful With limited experience in microcontrollers and purely from a hobby point of view.
This small ESP8266 development board is excellent value for money.
Comparing with an Arduino Uno (clone), this board had more memory, a massively faster speed, is programable with the Arduino IDE software with very little (often no) changes to an Arduino sketch.
On top of all this, it has Wifi which is very easy to program and use.
The only thing lacking are analogue inputs, there is only 1 x 10bit analogue input compared with the Arduino which has 6. But the D1 Mini has plenty of digital I/O's.
This development board is only just larger than the ESP-12 itself, but with the advantage of containing voltage regulator and USB to TTL(3v) serial built onto the rear of the board.
Cheap enough to use on one-off permanent IOT projects and much cheaper than Lo-Ra devices if you just want IOT projects around your home.
Great little board highly recommended.
