Great biography of Martha Ballard, midwife/healer of 18th century rural Maine
The information contained within was used in the fictional history novel of "The Frozen River" which I had read a month ago. The life of Martha Ballard was incorporated into the fictional history novel and I wanted to read a biography of her life because it was an opportunity to see what life in rural Maine was like for a healer/midwife in the later part of the 18th century .

Good story about a girl making her own mark in the world from difficult beginnings.
I had not heard Suzanne Valadon's story of model turned artist, and not just an artist but one that was accepted into the National Society of Fine Arts. She developed her own style. The backstory of her grandmother and mother was a bit boring but I guess it needed to be told to understand her mindset--to make money to pay for the basics of life she needed.
