On Point.
My days as a child and teenager were spent growing up on "Hungry HIll." I lived on 23rd Street and could see Saint Rocco Church from our kitchen window, played baseball at the field behind Mount Carmel Grade School, attended the Youth Dances held by the Church, and learned how to ice skate and play hockey at the park on 26th Street.
I came home from the Army in 1981 and was shocked at what had happened to the "downtown" area of Chicago Heights - IT WAS TURNED INTO A HUGE PARKING LOT! I think of the demise of my downtown area every time I hear the song with the line ... "Take Paradise and Put In a Parking Lot."
The book is right on point - Nobody new what happened and nobody takes the blame.
On a Special Note: I sat once at the bar in the "3 Star" as a Vietnam Vet - loved the Italian "family" atmosphere. At the time, and until I read this book, I was unaware that Mr. Panici was part of the political process of Chicago Heights. I knew when I was growing up that there was a "special" atmosphere on the hill and perhaps that was why we as kids all felt so safe - you didn't come to the "Hill" unless you lived there or were there to visit someone who did.
