Rinse and Squeeze with Soapy Water to Reduce the Initial Smell, and They're Fine
Like many inexpensive foam-ball toys, there's a strong rubbery/chemical smell when you first open the package. Just 'airing them out' or rinsing them with plain water won't work. Instead, I suggest you take advantage of their spongy nature: Run a sink full of soapy water and don't just soak them, but -squeeze- them, fill them up, and then squeeze them out dry again. Do this several times to let the soap permeate through all the pores in the material. Then let them dry for a day or two. The smell will diminish MUCH faster, and your cats will be more likely to play with them. It's a minor inconvenience, but that's why they're so affordable.
