The title is very faithful to what Hemingway intended.
This film was based on a novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. As a writer, I could tell that "Papa" didn't finish editing it before taking his own life, in great measure because he knew he had lost the ability to write with the same standards that governed his work as a much younger man. (Few know that Hemingway suffered many concussions and drank heavily for years. All this caused his decline as a writer and as a rational man.) Papa's wife, Mary, had the book edited and made certain it was published. The main character, Thomas Hudson, played by George C. Scott, was certainly based on Hemingway, himself. Especially beautiful was the portrayal of Hudson's love of his three sons. This is a most under-rated and overlooked movie. It is hard to find today and should be re-issued to a far larger audience. It is a treasure to me.

"Empire Of the Sun" is a masterpiece. There was no cgi.
"Empire" is a stunning film. Steven Spielberg was the perfect director, and Christian Bale couldn't have had a better debut. Disc Two contained a documentary about the making of the film, and it's amazing to see all the work performed by a massive crew. It's a pity that more viewers have no idea what all that goes into pre-production, production, and post-production. I'm glad that I purchased "Empire."
