You have to be a fan to bear & appreciate this set which is very much like VU 1969 & Max's but with nuanced differences being different live recordings. Lou's soloing is prevelent and Ride Into The Sun & Follow The Leader are classic. The 3 versions of Sister Ray are a bonus and a testament to a band that struggled on despite losing members and having already released 3 fully-realized masterpieces - a hard act to follow but I guess you had to be there and fortunately Quine was though with his death his remaining volumes of live recordings remain in limbo.

1 of 1 found this helpful Let's start by giving these people kudos for a tribute not only to The Velvet Underground but to the seminal debut The Velvet Underground & Nico. They recreate the album in the order that it was originally issued. That point is for the purist only because the real beauty of this cd is found in burning and rearranging the songs almost in infinite variations. Probably no other group(make that album) translates so effectively into a classical treatment as this one. For those of us who grew up with this one and have it deep within our heart & mind & soul the string quartet goes the extra mile and though it is instrumental you can sing along to it and will find yourself doing so! It is that good for what it is! Now Im waiting for volume 2 where surely they will tackle Sister Ray! Oh! Y'know the shopping cart & trays(dishes) part in European Son - yeah - well its there too. Run,Run,Run & Get it! Take a drag or two and let your unconsciousness sing!

On their last album they pull out all the stops and rock their hardest and harmonize their most harmonic and yes comparisons to Tom Petty and Lou Reed do apply. But like Galaxie 500 The Feelies have absorbed The Velvet Underground into their very psyche and carry on with a new sound that has the VU essence while improving upon the delivery. Controlled mayhem,crazy rhythms,harmony...sooner or later you'll come around even if you've been held for ransom since the day you were born! Decide. Enjoy!
