Deadly Sky: The American Combat Airman in World War Two
John C McManus is a well known U.S military historian. He combines oral history with an
analysis of the life of a U.S.airman in combat in World War Two. Writing is clear, oral history dovetails in a compelling text. No revisionism here, just a straightforward narrative of what they faced, how they dealt with it and what it was like. Recommended.

The Holts were pioneers in the battlefield guide area. They have many useful books in this series. See their works on D-Day or Ypres for instance. If you are going to visit the battlefield, this will provide you with overview, useful maps, suggested routes and much more.
When you are at the sites, looking at the ground, the orientation , the background, the detail this guide provides will greatly enhance your visit. It helps as well that their patriotism is clear as well as dedication to providing correct information. With photos, specific itineraries, any traveler to the Somme will benefit from this purchase. Those who want a "virtual" tour will also find it very good.
