Long on narrative..short on detail
Sir Richard Burton is without doubt one of history`s great characters and he lived an almost unique life. However on his death his wife (for some inexplicable reason) decided to burn 95% of all his diaries. The result is that little is really known about the inner man, his motives and the innumerable quests of discovery he undertook. The result is that, for the most part we are left to enquire of others their impression of the man and his life. This book tries hard to build up a picture of his life, but it is simply an impossible task. Like trying to build a jigsaw with 95% of the pieces missing. The result is (sadly) a some-what tedious, and repetitive book, that appears to cover the same ground over and over again.

Great In Depth book on a fascinating individual.
As a child I first came across Prince Rupert in my history books.. Rumored to be in league with the Devil because he rode into battle with a tiny white poodle under his arm(supposedly his soul) and because on at least two occasions a pistol was aimed point blank at his head, but failed to fire.
This book is not written in classic historical fashion, but reads more like a novel. But in this case it works really well. Before reading this book(and purely by chance) I read a history of the English Civil war. I am glad I did because it allows a greater understanding of some of the historical events outlined in the book.
