There came a time when the old gods died!
In 1970, Fourth World explodes out of King Kirby's mind like a four-color Big Bang. In 2008, DC manages to squeeze his universe into four hardcovers for a new generation. With these volumes, we see an already fertile mind at its most fevered productivity, as we turn each page to a new character, a ripe world, or a fresh concept. Death is a paraplegic on skis. The church organ belts a brainwash refrain. Sweet old Granny Goodness sends her slave-children to murder and mayhem. Creativity so relentlessly floods from Kirby's pen that he can only imagine conformity as Anti-Life itself. But let's not gush. Let's evaluate. Let's be pragmatic. The volumes house about twenty silver age comics a piece. Each volume is priced somewhere around $40, so that's two bucks an issue and that's not counting the introductions by industry titans like Grant Morrison and Walter Simonson nor the fascinating afterwords by Kirby insider Mark Evanier. So keeping this math in mind, there's really no excuse not to own these volumes. They look fantastic and make for a wild read. You don't want to be siezed by the skiing paraplegic before reading Fourth World. That'd be sorely missing out.
