Mirrors for Princes
This is a really well written book on an often neglected topic. Unlike many writers on Afghanistan, the author appears to speak some of the local language and have primary experience of the topic, rather than compiling the reports of others and interpretations of interpreters.

Great British Cooking
This book is a classic introduction to British cuisine. The recipes are clear, not unnecessarily complicated and delicious. Mary Berry is a great and iconic cook. Unkind, and sometimes unfair, things have been said about British cookery. But - what ever its merits and demerits - it is preeminently a chef's cuisine. By this I mean that, if it is good people are surprised and impressed, and if it is not the chef can claim it's authentic. It is not necessary to own an Aga stove, though if one does then ownership of this book is de rigueur.
